Manh Choh: Bringing Jobs & Economic Opportunities to Interior Alaska
In September 2020, Kinross acquired 70% of the Manh Choh project (formerly the Peak project) in Alaska, in a joint venture with Contango Ore which holds a 30% non-operating minority interest. The Athabascan name of “Manh Choh” (meaning “Big Lake”) has considerable cultural significance to the local community and was chosen after close consultation with the Upper Tanana Athabascan Village of Tetlin.
Located approximately 240 miles southeast of Fort Knox, Manh Choh is a small, open pit mine. Rock from Manh Choh is trucked to Fort Knox where it is processed in the existing mill and infrastructure to benefit both the project and the mine and reduce the mine’s environmental footprint.
